CW Operating Tips

Ever since the NAQCC was founded, we have had the intention of doing things to help the newcomers to CW. A shortage of manpower and time prevented us from implementing the ideas as fully as we intended. We have done things like giving a tremendous bonus multiplier to sprint participants for using a straight key to try to keep the speed in our sprints down far enough for new CW operators to participate. Also a couple of our challenges have been geared toward newcomers. However that was far short of our plans.

Fortunately now we are having members stepping forward to volunteer in helping to run the club, and we can do some of the things we originally intended.

One of the things we wanted to do was to survey our members to find out why they joined the club and what they expected from us. Our new recruitment officer Paul, KD2MX has taken care of that for us now.

A representative sample of the members affirmed our surmise that we should be helping newcomers to CW, so that is one of the first things we are going to take care of by starting this new section of our web site.

Ron, K5DUZ is also preparing some sort of 'Elmering' feature designed to help in learning CW and other basic CW matters. I'm not sure just what he has in mind, but knowing Ron, it will be something very good and very useful.

There is already a tutorial on sprint operation in the Contests/Sprints section of the site if you're interested in that.

Also my own (K3WWP) web site already has some very good CW operating tutorials. In fact much of the info here on the NAQCC site is derived from that material.
