The NAQCC Cartoon Characters Challenge

PREMISE:
This is another of our standard alphabet challenges with the difference from other challenges being only the word list and an additional prize. When Paul N8XMS donated a ham radio cartoon book to use as a prize in conjunction with one of our events, we immediately thought it should be given away as an alphabet challenge dealing with cartoon character's names. Obvious, no?

TIME FRAME:
Aug 1, 2008 0000Z through Aug 31, 2008 2400Z

RULES:
You must use QRP and the other station can be using any power. You can use any antenna you want.

If you're looking for an easy way to keep track of an alphabet challenge, here is a tutorial and suggested worksheet that will make it very simple for you.

Make as many words as you can from this list of cartoon characters:

MICKEY MOUSE
DONALD DUCK
POPEYE
TOM AND JERRY
UNCLE SCROOGE
CHIP AND DALE
CASPER
SUPERMAN

For reference, especially if you use the worksheet, the following 19 letters are contained somewhere in the words:
A C D E G H I J K L M N O P R S T U Y

You can use a letter in a call TWICE. For example, N3AQC's N could be used in DONALD DUCK and SUPERMAN.

If a call has two or more of the same letters, only one may be used. For example, only one of the three E's in K3EEE could be used for two E's in the words (for example CASPER and SUPERMAN). You can't use the two extra E's for anything.

Subsequent QSO's with the same station cannot be used for additional letters. For example, no matter how many times you work K3WWP, you can only get two K's from his call.

All parts of a call can be used except for strict portable or mobile designators like /M, /P, /A, and the like. As an example, it is perfectly OK to use all the letters in VE5/WA3BCD/M or HA3KSB/YV0/P except the M and P.

AWARDS:
A certificate goes to the two members using the most different calls to make ALL the words.

PRIZES:
A set of beautiful bug or paddle handles. These pieces are wonderfully hand crafted and donated by Gregg, WB8LZG. To see what they look like check them out here.

Everyone who earns a participation point as outlined in the next section is eligible to win the prize. A list of those eligible will be sent to Gregg, WB8LZG who will select a winner in a random drawing. An individual can only win one set of paddles after which they become ineligible for future drawings. At Gregg's request, NAQCC officers at their discretion are also eligible for all his bug/paddle handle giveaways. If you do not wish to be entered in the drawing for any reason, let us know when you submit your report. Some folks only use a straight key, for example and would have no use for bug/paddle handles.

ADDITIONAL PRIZE THIS MONTH: A book of ham radio cartoons ("N0UJR and His Friends" by Greg Trook) donated by Paul N8XMS. Everyone who earns a participation point goes into a drawing conducted by K3WWP (who thus becomes ineligible). The only exception is the person who wins the bug/paddle handles this month. They become ineligible also since we want as many different people as possible to share in our NAQCC prizes.

PARTICIPATION AWARD AND WEB LISTING:
Anyone making 2 or more of the words and submitting a report gets a Participation Point and a web listing.

LOGS:
For your report, just list the names you made and the stations used for each word. If you use a call more than once in a name, please list it more than once in the correct positions as in:
PROD - K3WWP, WA8REI, N2OO, DK5WW
WORD - WY3H, AC4O, VE1RGB, D4C
EXAMPLE - VE3AB, KD2MX, VE3AB, KD2MX, K3WWP, N1LU, VE3AB

Be sure to include how many calls you used to make the words to be eligible for the certificates.

Please preface any soapbox comments with "SOAPBOX:" so we will know what you want posted and what is private.

Soapbox: K3WWP - The NAQP made this much easier than it looked. I finished by working K2LE for my final letter (L) 3 hours and 22 minutes into the NAQP. While I was in the contest, I was thinking it would be interesting to try to master the challenge by using only QSO's from one band. I may look into that. I made 289 QSO's in the NAQP pretty well distributed among 10,15,20, and 40 meters. Or I may try to do what I usually do when I finish a challenge early - go for just getting one letter from each call I work. At any rate, it was (is) yet another very enjoyable challenge.

N8XMS - "Good grief," no Charlie Brown! As usual this was a fun challenge. Good sprint conditions made it easy to finish up my missing letters. (Well, you see, Lucy told me "No blockheads on the list!" - K3WWP)

N1LU - I also got most of mine in the NAQP where I operated from an obervation tower overlooking Lake Winnipesuakee in NH using an FT-817, T1 tuner and random wire antenna to a tree.

W2JEK - used 15 calls from naqcc sprint plus 10 others for total of 25 calls. needed 8 e's after sprint qso's and 8 other letters. good fun getting them. 72 and 73 don younger w2jek #1135
